10 August:

Chestnut filly by MALHUB ex HILL OF PLENTY. HILL OF PLENTY is a well bred mare being a half sister to the Grade winner BUSHRA and the stakes placed ON GOLDEN HILL, out of the Gr 1 winning mare MILL HILL. Black type winners MODERN BEAT, SMART AS PAINT, SAND, and MOST PRECIOUS all appear under the second dam.

Of note, HILL OF PLENTY’s 2003 filly - ISANDLWANA (by Russian Revival) is named after one of the most famous battles in South Africa’s history. The Anglo Zulu War of 1879 is famous for the great battles of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift - a day in history when more Victoria Crosses were awarded for valour than in any other battle in history. Survivors from Isandlwana crossed the Buffalo River at a place forever after named “The Fugitives’ Drift” and the property, a Natural Heritage Site, overlooking the “sphinx” of Isandlwana and the Oskarberg at Rorke’s Drift, includes the site where Lieutenant Melvill and Lieutenant Coghill lost their lives saving the Queen’s Colour of the 24th Regiment. Owners David and Nicky Rattray, pioneers of Heritage Tourism in South Africa, have created an award winning lodge for visitors to savour this extraordinary saga, with accommodation offered at Fugitives’ Drift Lodge itself and the Guest House several hundred yards away. The 2,500 hectare reserve where the Lodges lie also contains diverse and abundant wildlife including giraffe, zebra, kudu, hartebeest and a host of smaller antelope, as well as 275 recorded bird species. I had the pleasure of staying at the Fugitives Lodge a few weeks back and if you are ever in the area and have a few days to spare I would strongly recommend you book yourself in and ensure David, Rob or Joseph leads your Battlefields Tour.

15 August:

Bay filly by SLEW THE RED ex PENTHOUSE PET. PENTHOUSE PET is a half sister to the 14-time winner (including twice at Grade 3 level) MIDNIGHT RUN. This is the family of BIG SWINGER, GAY MAMSELLE, MONSIEUR MUSIC and the ARCSA Champion 3YO colt of 1993 GOLDEN TAIPAN. The Slew the Red filly is typical of this mare’s progeny - very flashy with white socks and blaze.

Bay filly by MALHUB ex LOTTI. Owned by Mr Albert Rapp. LOTTI was a 3 time winner including the Listed Juvenile Fillies Stakes (also running 3rd in the Gr 3 Natal Golden Slipper and the Three Troikas Handicap [L]). Broodmare manager Annet Becker reports that Lotti was so excited about delivering the foal that she was already whinnying to it moments after her waters had broken and she had given just 2 pushes … the staff on hand needing to remind her that she had a bit more work to do before she could start offering greetings!! The filly is a lovely type and her mother is (not surprisingly) ecstatically proud of her. STOP PRESS: LOTTI’s first foal -  (by MUHTAFAL) continues in her winning ways. She won today’s FM 74 Handicap for Fillies and Mares (1200m) at Fairview.

17 August:

Chestnut colt by KAHAL ex VINTAGE EVENT. It’s quite unusual to come across a chestnut Kahal (who is bay dominant)  but this lad bucked the trend. The broodmare team were certainly happy with him. VINTAGE EVENT is a half sister to MY ADMIRAL who ran 2nd in the Gr 1 Austrian derby. This new colt is a half brother to GOLDEN OCCASION (by Personal Hope) who sold at last year’s Ready to Run sale for R60,000 and who is currently in work with Michael Roberts. Michael happened to be visiting Hartford this morning and reports that GOLDEN OCCASION is working extremely well.
