In global terms, the Kwa Zulu Natal Breeding Industry is often compared to Florida (in the USA) or Queensland/Victoria (in Australia). It is the Cape in South Africa (in the West of the country) that has typically dominated breeding, just as Kentucky and the Hunter Valley would assume that title in their respective parts of the world.
‘Florida’ perhaps, but it hasn’t stopped Summerhill being crowned Champion Breeders 2 years running, nor has it curbed the production of all number of exceptional race horses that consistently perform at the country’s highest levels. The inaugural KZN Breeders Newsletter says it all:
“We may after all only be small in numbers , but we are BIG in results. One need look no further than the results of the Emerald Cup ( Africa’s richest race on the sand) held at the Vaal Racetrack on the 25th of September. In a very high quality field with several Gr1 winners we are very proud to say that KZN bred horses came in first , second and fourth. Congratulations to Dominic Zaki and his team of very happy and proud owners of NATIONAL SPIRIT who won in resounding fashion . National Spirit was bred by Dr Allen Bechard and his wife Robyn and our congratulations go to them too. Well done also to the connections of MEN OF RHEIMS and FANYANA.”
